We are often asked, “Should I take my young children to a Pediatric dentist?”
A pediatric dentist is one who specilaizes in children’s teeth and as stated in the first line Dental Clinic practiced pediatric dentistry for 5 years before joining his father in his business, so you can be assured that Dental Clinic will be a good fit for your family no matter what age the children might be. But there are a couple of other advantages to Dental Clinic’s practice; you avoid the process of organizing dental appointments with multiple dentist and even more important you don’t have to think about at what age do I switch my child over from a pediatric dentist and they don’t have the awkard feeling of sitting in a kid’s waiting room as they get bigger.
A couple of concerns that parents ask about for small children:
Baby Bottle Tooth Decay Prevention
- Brush children’s teeth twice a day with a grain size amount of toothpaste.
- Put only formula, milk or breast milk in a bottle.
- Finish bottle before bedtime or nap time.
Thumb Sucking
It is natural for children to suck their thumb or a pacifier. Most children stop by the age of 4. Sucking their thumb after 4 years old could cause a concern for the alignment of their teeth.
If the child is a passive thumb sucker or just lets it sit in their mouth there may not be a concern, but if they are an aggressive thumb sucker their could be a concern. Let’s talk.
Dental Emergencies
- Some things that could happen to children and what to be prepared to do:
- Knocked out tooth, keep it moist at all times, either in the check of the child’s mouth or in milk or gum. Call our office immediately.
- Cracked tooth, rinse mouth with warm water and clean the area. Use a cold compress to avoid swelling, place it on the check area.
- Bitten tongue, clean and place a cold compress on the tongue.
- Do not put aspirin on the aching tooth or gum. Rinse the mouth with warm water and floss gently to remove food that might be caught between the teeth.
If your child is between 6 and 12 here are some common concerns:
Sealants
- Sealants is an easy way to protect a child’s teeth.
- Normally applied to the chewing surface and back teeth.
- Used to cover pits and grooves to protect from cavities.
Mouthgards
- A great protection for children that play sports, or just a big rambunctious.
- They cushion the blows that could break teeth or injure the mouth area.
Bad Bite
- A bad bite, also called Malocclusion is where the teeth are crowded or not aligned.
- Could affect the development of the jaws.
- Affect eating and speaking.
- Could wear abnormally or faster than those with proper alignment.
